Changes
My how things change! I am not usually one that likes to experience change but lately I am liking the changes I'm experiencing. J has started reciting bible verses instead of "Soulja Boy" and "Low" lyrics. Even though it is required for school, that great school is allowing my son to memorize verses, something I have never been really good at. So I have promised myself that I, along with him, will memorize the verse of the week.
Along with that change I finally got Big S to read a Dr. Kevin Leman book (getting him to read anything outside of work and the Bible that is HUGE). We are trying the "How to Change your Kid by Friday." Just trying to change the way we discipline in itself is scary. If we can see the changes that Dr. Leman says we will see, it will truly be awesome. It is so hard to change the way we have acted for all of our parenting life. As we reflect we are seeing that most of our bad habits are our kids bad habits. I admit I am a screamer- "Hurry up!" "Stop" "Sha..." (my family would appreciate that one) I love to scream my husbands name. Either Big S has picked it up from me during our 12 years of marriage or he does it to drown me out. Also, I tend to be a lollygagger and so are my children. Then we wonder why our kids do this?! Again, I don't like change but I will accept this challenge to change the dynamics of our family.
What is even more awesome is school is using the Love and Logic technique, which is basically what Dr. Leman uses...reality discipline. I have the hardest time with letting J go to school without his homework completed and letting him face the consequences. For one, he just doesn't grasp the bad grade thing, second, I feel like a bad mom by sending him to school w/out his homework finished, but hate standing over him saying "get your homework done so you can go play." Neither boy really gives a flip whether they shower, Dr. Leman says to then treat them like a baby and give them a bath myself. That is not a bad thing for my boys. They would love for me to bathe them. I need a 1-800 number direct to Dr. Leman. Anyone got any ideas?? God is sooooooo Good!! D

Well, you just KNOW I'm cracking up. I can actually "hear" you right now..."SHAAAAA....."
As for the bathing thing? How is our allowing them to be lazy and even pampered by our bathing them discipline? Frankly, I don't have the time to bathe my kids now that they are old enough. I say lets call Dr. Leman and have him bathe them and see how long he enjoys it. Of course, then there's that whole stranger issue, but he is a doctor, right?
I'm just glad that we know the perfect Parent...and it ain't us!
Keep writing...love reading it!
Rob
P.S. And Miss M is ALL that and bag of chips!
double p.s. love seeing that you have community with those at the school and that J is memorizing scripture. Tell him Aunt R is memorizing Romans 8 (ALL of it). A first for me. My buddy E is memorizing all of Ephesians 1. You keep it up, Dood. We need to hide the word in our hearts and not make excuses for not doing so!
